Human (Jason Schnarr)

Spiritual alternative rock based on the days of creation.

Though alternative rock is not the music of my generation, I do find that I've developed an affection for it through my kids. Alternative rock tends to fluctuate between gritty, loud "hard rock" sounds and softer, emotional portions. In "Seven Days" Jason uses this music style to express heartfelt spiritual themes. Using a format of the seven days of creation, he takes concepts from deeper meanings of the story to express development in the human spirit. Heidi McCardell joins in with beautiful harmony as Jason sings his intense and reflective lyrics with emotion you can feel. There are great alternating beats and moods, from rocking electric guitar to smooth and soulful violin. There's a track that you have to find by rewinding from song 1 called "Feeling Low." This relates to that darkness in the creation story before there was any light. Then in song 1, "Seeing Lights," the words speak of "seeing lights in all people" to match the wonder of "Let there be light!" The CD carries us then through day 2, in which Jason sings of rising above what your earthly senses tell you into the "vision of the One," separating the "waters above" from the "waters beneath." Song 3 involves feelings of being stuck, crying out to God for help as a new inner world is forming, and Song 4, the giving of a new name and the inner creation of a sun, moon, and stars. Song 5 intrigues me in that Jason sings "I faltered; my sharpening eyes, too focused on the truth"—making me think of how sharp truth can be if it's not tempered by love—but then speaks of being given a new heart by God, which brings everything alive. Song 6 is about letting go of control, and the feelings of fear and loneliness that result. And yet, through letting God become all, we become truly human. There are references to the words of Jesus on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" which then lead into the gentle climax song, #7: "Remember Me and I will be with you." The verses sing of offerings of the heart, of peace, of voice, song, tears and laughter. I applaud Jason for this unique and meaningful piece of art, with a beautiful blend of voices and instruments. If you already like alternative rock, I think you will really like it. If you'd like to be introduced to it, this is a good way, with a lot of depth and symbolism. I myself will be listening to it many times.
